The schools are reopening after the summer vacation. The children are filled with hopes for a new beginning and a new start and they dream to remain in the class rooms if circumstances are favourable. The parents of children from low economic backgrounds in Government schools find it a challenge in sending their children to schools. Most of them cannot afford to give their children a proper meal a day and as a result educating their children remains a distant dream. For them, feeding their children is of utmost importance than educating them.  As a result, education tends to be secondary. So, NGOs in India, like Akshaya Patra takes up the responsibility of feeding children in Government schools in partnership with the Government of India. The organisation works to make sure hunger won’t remain a constraint for children to come to schools.

Government School Children

As the children are getting ready for schools after the summer vacation, the organisation is also ready to welcome the children with nutritious and wholesome meal so that the children have the energy to focus in class rooms.  Akshaya Patra is serving mid-day meals to 1.5 million children in 24 locations across 10 states of India, providing them with freshly cooked meal on all school days. To provide children with fresh, warm, nutritious food at the right place and at the right time is not as easy as we think it to be. To retain the quality and excellence tireless efforts are required. The entire kitchens of Akshaya Patra have to prepare tonnes of dal, sambar, rice, rotis, khichadi, different types of pulao, sweet rice, kheer and kadhi maintaining proper hygiene and quality.

The vacation time for Akshaya Patra is a time for making necessary renovations and changes, buying machines to enhance the kitchens. The processes in the kitchen are never-ending which always require proper maintenance to bring out the best results.  This NGO in India has earned a name for its quality and excellence and for being among the largest provider of midday meals to government schools in the country.

Just as the children are making preparations to come to school with new books, pencils and other school accessories, Akshaya Patra also sees to it that kitchen is under proper condition for welcoming the students to the new period of hopes and dreams by feeding the children. The organisation is striving hard to welcome them and retain them in class rooms so that they remain healthy, strong and intelligent with full attendance for the entire year.

Less Obvious Benefits of the Mid-day Meal Scheme

While the primary objectives of Mid-day Meal Programme are to avoid classroom hunger, improve school enrolment and attendance, and address the issue of malnutrition, the benefits of this scheme go well beyond these objectives.

The Mid-day Meal Scheme (MDMS) in its full-fledged form was implemented in 2004 to address two key issues: hunger and education. As a part of this scheme, a wholesome meal is provided to all children in the 6 to 14 age group studying in government and government-aided schools, making nutritious meal a reality for children who otherwise can’t afford a square meal.

With the implementation of this scheme, it became easier for the authorities to convince people to send their children to school. Children, for their part, were more than eager to come to school, as a result of which school enrolment and attendance improved. It also helped in solving the problem of classroom hunger—one of the main reasons for lack of concentration in school children.

Government School Children

Over the years, the Mid-day Meal Scheme has done a fair bit to eradicate hunger and promote education, but these are not the only two areas where the scheme has helped. There exist other areas where the indirect impact of the same has been felt.

It Promotes Socialisation

Happy Children

Among the less-known advantages of mid-day meal scheme, one of the most important is the fact that it fosters the habit of eating together in children. The sight of all children coming together every afternoon for their meal is a sight to treasure. This intermingling improves unity among them. You can never stress enough on the importance of socialisation in India. The ambitious mid-day meal programme has helped ensure that caste, religion, or other similar factors don’t come in between children and education.

It Provides Employment Opportunities

Akshaya Patra Decentralized Kitchen

The Mid-day Meal Programme is the largest school meal programme in the world, feeding over 120 million children of over 1 million schools. But obviously, an operation of this scale will require a huge workforce. According to the data put forth by the Government, the Programme employs around 2.6 million people across the country as cooks and helpers.

Besides the cooks and helpers hired by schools, there are several individuals who are employed by the NGOs who have got into a public-private partnership (PPP) with the Government to implement this scheme. The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which feeds over 1.5 million school children across ten states of India, hires about 6300 people. The not-for-profit organisation based out of Bengaluru also operates two decentralised kitchens where women self-help groups (SHGs), who have a better idea of the local palette, are employed.

Other Benefits

The guidelines put forth by the National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education (NP-NSPE), state that the Government should ‘mobilize community support and promote public-private partnership for the programme’ wherever possible.

Yet another less-known benefit of the mid-day meal scheme is that it helps the local economy as perishable commodities, like vegetables, dals, oil, etc., are purchased from the local market.

Chopped Vegetables

In essence, the Mid-day Meal Programme has done a lot for the children of our country. However, considering the vast size of our country, we understand that there’s a lot to be done. If we are to achieve this, we need to work together; all of us, Central and state governments, partnering NGOs, communities, and every single stakeholder.

Akshaya Patra Feeds to End Child Hunger

The Akshaya Patra Foundation which was established in the year 2000 has had an amazing, enriching journey over the past 15 years. Started with just feeding 1,500 children across 5 schools in Bengaluru, Akshaya Patra today feeds over 1.4 million children across 24 locations and 10 states of India. The organisation was conceptualized with the idea that children should not have to choose between education and nutrition. The Foundation’s vision is that ‘No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger’ and the mission is to feed 5 million children by 2020. Through its Mid-Day Meal Programme, the organisation works to end classroom hunger in India, and feed and educate underserved children.

Feed the hungry children

In many cases, children do not have the opportunity to attend school since they are forced to help their parents earn enough money for a single meal every day. With the mid-day meals provided by The Akshaya Patra Foundation, children have an incentive to attend school and get educated at the same time. Parents too are more eager to allow their children to attend school as Akshaya Patra assures their child with a daily, nutritious meal and eases the burden on parents to provide for their young ones.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation with the support of all its well-wishers aims to eliminate classroom hunger in India, and give children the opportunity to achieve their goals. For any organization, people support is important. To support this Foundation, make an online donation and help us to feed more children.
