Why Children Need a Wholesome Meal

What makes the world’s largest NGO-run mid-day meal programme significant? It’s because it feeds the children with wholesome meal. This kind of meal aids in growth of their body and mind. During their childhood, children are more prone to develop at least one of the micronutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A, iodine, iron, zinc or folate. They must be given a wholesome meal in sufficient quantity to ensure their body develops with their age.

Food for children

The mid-day meal programme run by The Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO that has kitchens across India. One of them is in Surat. From their state-of-the-art kitchen in Surat, the meal is supplied to various schools in and around Surat.

The NGO is feeding the children in Surat as part of its nation-wide programme that’s run in collaboration with the Government. This programme lays emphasis on the wholesomeness of the meals because these meals directly impact children’s growth. The NGO, that began operations in the year 2000, works in active collaboration with the government and government-run schools in order to feed the children.

In Surat, the school children are especially excited as they are getting their favourite meals every day served by the NGO’s volunteers. As part of the Hunger Action Month, the NGO is trying to take mid-day meals to more schools in Surat and other parts of Gujarat.

The contributors or donors to the NGO get the benefit of 80G deduction in income tax. That way more donors are encouraged to contribute and help in feeding the children. However, it’s not just the 80G deduction that encourages people. Many people in the city take out time to volunteer in the kitchen. They help the staff in cooking the meals and serving it to the children.

The kitchen of this NGO in Surat especially uses pulses such as Toor dal, fortified soy dal, green gram whole, Urad dal, peas, Moong dal, cow pea, green gram sprouts, soy products like- chunks, flakes, Gram dal, Bengal gram whole, channa dal etc. while preparing the meals. Since the menu is already in place, the meals are always healthy and wholesome and benefit the children.

Feeding the children with wholesome meals is significant today if we want our children to experience a healthy growth. You can join us this month as we observe Hunger Action Month and attempt to eliminate hunger among children in India.

This Teacher’s Day, Let’s Make Education Accessible to Children

A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart, it is said. And when children are free to use their hands for writing, their mind for thinking and their heart for learning, true education happens. But many children in India are deprived of education due to inaccessibility to school. They are forced to work to earn their meals. The need to for donation for education in India is a need of the hour.

Teachers day

Every year on Teachers’ Day, we hear amazing tales of extraordinary teachers who chose children charity as a mission of their lives. We learn about some of them who went an extra mile to donate or teach or volunteer for education in India. Many of these set great examples of teaching or doing children charity, became life mentors and brought several children to the light of education.

Our heart especially reaches out to hundreds of dedicated teachers serving in Government or Government-aided schools.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation serves mid-day meals to children in thousands of such schools. The volunteers interact with teachers who freely extend their support to the foundation in serving a wholesome lunch. These teachers encourage children to enjoy their meals and come to the school regularly.

The foundation is observing Hunger Month in September by educating teachers and students about the ill effects of under nourishment. The organisation is spreading awareness about the need to feed the children through charity or donation. We are thankful to teachers who are helping us fight hunger this month.

You may be a teacher or someone who is touched by a teacher’s charity. You may consider helping the society by donating for education in India. All donations with The Akshaya Patra Foundation gain income tax exemption. Donate today.

For Every Child’s Education in Karnataka!

As a child, what was the first thing you did after waking up? The answers may differ – finish pending homework, get ready in a rush, complain about disappeared items like tie, belt or socks, or help the younger sibling get ready.

For every childs education

For many Akshaya Patra beneficiaries, their morning tales are quite different. While one wakes up to help mother fetch water from a nearby tank, another wakes up to clean the house. Although it’s not a relaxed morning, their energy in classrooms never takes a back seat. While the Government is providing them free education, an NGO in Karnataka is ensuring that they do not drop out of school due to hunger.

Akshaya Patra provides mid-day meals to more than 4 lakh school children in Karnataka. Through this initiative, we have understood the importance of two aspects that eventually orients children’s future – food and education; ones that play a key role in Akshaya Patra’s Mid-Day Meal Programme.

Because, children matter

India is home to one-third of the world’s poor and millions of children in the country are away from school to earn a single meal a day. Although hunger is a prevailing condition, we believe there are sufficient resources to provide food for children in the country.

In Karnataka, we began our operations in 2000 and with every passing year, we have expanded our presence in different states. Today, we serve over 1.6 million school children across India. Here are the two recent updates from Akshaya Patra Karnataka:

  1. Taste of Joy in Bengaluru

The Akshaya Patra food truck was at Global Village Tech Park in RR Nagar, Bengaluru on February 23, 2017, as part of its Taste of Joy initiative. About a 1,000 people working at the tech park got a taste of nutritious meals, served hot! The initiative, besides offering people a taste of the food we prepare, also brings to their notice our cause of Food for Education aimed towards eliminating classroom hunger.

  1. Roti-making machine installed in Ballari

Inaugurating the Roti making machine

Recently, we inaugurated our first roti-making machine in South India at Ballari kitchen. The 40-feet machine, donated by Vijaya Bank as part of its CSR activities, is fully automated and has the capacity to produce 20,000 rotis per hour. We would like to thank Vijaya Bank for their generous support towards our Food for Education programme.

You can care for our cause too!

Our focus continues to be hunger relief among school goers through nutritious mid-day meals every day! To ensure that a child is not deprived of education due to hunger, you can contribute Rs 950 to feed a child for an entire year! Donate to charity and get 100% income tax exemption.

Food for Education is a unique concept in a country like India where there’s a large population of children who need food. These children often do not go to school. Many working parents don’t send their children to school so the latter can take care of their younger siblings back home. There are often far too many mouths to feed to worry about education. The most practical solution to this problem is to bring children to school and provide them with one-time meal, known as Mid-Day Meal.

That’s what Food for Education is all about. It’s about incentivising attendance in school. And no, children don’t leave the school premises the moment they finish their meals. They stay back and study hard. Parents now feel more motivated to send their children to schools since they know their kids would not only get food, but also they would study in a safe environment.

Akshaya Patra has been on a mission of Food for Education since the year 2000. It has been working actively alongside the government and has so far reached 13,529 schools in the country and has successfully completed 2.12 billion meals so far.

Thanksgiving Message by Akshaya Patra

None of us got to where we are alone. Whether the assistance we received was obvious or subtle, acknowledging someone’s help is a big part of understanding the importance of saying thank you. — Harvey Mackay

Appreciation is something we all like for the hard work we do, for the achievements we make; the sound of that one very important word – Thank-you – is always like music. The level or intensity then doesn’t matter. Maybe it is a very small assistance that we provided or we did something really big for someone, appreciation always makes us feel proud and content. But how many times we do the same to other people? How many times do we express gratitude?

But first things first; what are you truly and deeply thankful for? For some people, it’s their family and friends. For others, it may be their jobs or careers. For still others, it may simply be a one-time meal or second-hand books that they get from others. Similarly, people have different ways to show their thankfulness towards what life has given them. Some like to commemorate it in grand style, some like to treat their near and dear ones, and some simply like to align it with fulfilling the needs of those who are deprived, be it the very basic human needs to survive or something else. All of these though point to that one feeling that when we are happy, we like to share and want to see the same happiness on the faces of the people around us.

The message of Thanksgiving is simply to reach out and say – Thank You. If you are one of those who are truly grateful for your life and the education you received as a child, you may choose to donate for a cause that relates to the biggest blessings of your life. Akshaya Patra offers many such opportunities where there are provisions for tax deductible donations.

What else are you thankful for? The clean air you breathe, the freedom of expression you have or the right to education that you are entitled to. Ever thought of giving it back to the society by donating for a cause such as education? You can practically be a part of this cause by lending a helping hand to the Mid-Day Meal Programme run by Akshaya Patra.

Contributions you make would result in an overall upliftment of the society in general and ultimately also help in adding to your life’s experiences. Upon looking back, you may find some of these memories worth remembering and sharing.

Thanksgiving worldwide is a holiday that’s most awaited. It is equivalent to harvest in India where farmers celebrate the arrival of the season. No wonder Thanksgiving has harvest in its root of celebration. The biggest Thanksgiving message is to be grateful for the crops, for the food and for the education that people have received year after year.

Helping others by donating to NGO’s also is often a good way of conveying gratitude. These are tax deductible donations whereby every donor gets income tax exemptions.

So, donate or pledge to donate to shape a life of those who need it.

Charitable institutions play a crucial role in socioeconomic development of the country, and therefore, there exist Income Tax rules that have been specifically constituted to encourage people to donate to charities. Some charitable projects are approved as eligible for tax deductible donations under Section 35AC and Section 80GGA.

If you have your own business or you happen to be a salaried individual donating to an eligible institution, then you can claim 100% deduction under Section 35AC. If, on the other hand, your source of income is anything other than business, then deduction can be claimed under Section 80GGA. These provisions in the Income Tax Act are meant to help charitable institutions attract prospective donors and raise funds to run the programmme.

If you want to avail tax benefits, you need to check which projects are eligible for the same. It’s the Central Government that decides which programme of which charitable institution is to be approved for tax deductible donation under various sections of the IT Act. The Akshaya Patra Foundation’s Mid-day Meal Programme is one of the projects you can donate to in order to avail 100% income tax exemption under Section 35AC.

Any donation of Rs. 500 and above is eligible for tax benefit in this case. If say you donate Rs. 2000, then this amount will be deducted from your taxable amount. You will receive a certificate acknowledging your contribution. You can use the same to claim exemption from taxable income.

By donating to Akshaya Patra, you will be doing your bit to feed children, bring them to the classroom, and nurture smiles.

Support a Child and Avail 100% Income Tax Exemption

We’ve all been hungry before, but very few of us have had to go days between eating a complete meal. Millions of children across India experience debilitating hunger every day, and are forced to focus all their energy on simply earning enough money for a single meal. In a situation like this, children cannot even consider getting educated or enjoying their lives in any way.

Akshaya Patra Inititative10

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a top NGO in India, has been trying hard since the year 2000 to ensure that no child in India misses an opportunity to attend school due to hunger.  The freshly cooked nutritious meals served by the NGO have helped bring over a million children back to school. Today, over 1.4 million children in 10 states in India receive mid-day meals from Akshaya Patra. Apart from improving children’s nutritional status, the mid-day meals have helped improve school enrolment, classroom attendance, concentration levels and performance.
