The Akshaya Patra Blue Buses play an integral role in facilitating the work of the Foundation. It is with these iconic vehicles that the tasty, fresh Akshaya Patra food is delivered to over 1.4 million school children across India every day.
There are totally more than 500 Blue Buses in the Akshaya Patra fleet. The buses are all designed to look the same, making them an easily recognised sight on the streets. Each of these buses has been specially modified with the fabricated racks in a honeycomb structure to ensure that the vessels containing the food are packed in a stable manner, with the optimum utilisation of space.
The Akshaya Patra buses are also properly insulated to make sure that the food retains its heat till the very last bus reaches the last school. Quality in every aspect of Akshaya Patra’s operations process is crucial. Therefore, the buses are regularly cleaned through steam sterilisation and random checks are undertaken. To top this off, the Foundation has also ensured that every aspect of the bus in connection with the food is of the prescribed food grade.
These buses that have been so carefully designed by The Akshaya Patra Foundation are a beacon of hope to underserved children all over India. If you would like to contribute a vehicle to the Foundation, click here.
In preparation for Click a Smile 2014, the annual photography competition held by The Akshaya Patra Foundation for amateur and professional photographers, here is a recap of last year’s event.
The competition ran from 20th November to 22nd December, 2013, and focussed on capturing the innocence and beauty behind a child’s smile. The only stipulation was that the contestants must send in their best three photographs of a smiling child (or children). The children could be featured at home, at school, in the neighbourhood or even the playground.
The competition last year drew in a huge response with over 700 photographs being entered. Out of these many images 1st place went to Moni Sankar Das for his photograph titled ‘Smiling’, 2nd place to Seyed Ali Seyedi for his ‘The hole of Happiness’ and 3rd place to Kaushik Majumder for his ‘Before Fest’. The winners were selected by renowned photographer, D. Radhakrishnan Nair.
Aside from the three top winners, six consolation prizes were chosen. The winners were Suman Bhattacharyya for his ‘Blooming Buds’, Raghu Ranjan Sarkar for his ‘Colourful Buds’, Nyugen Dong for ‘Happyness with Rain’, Soumalya Kumar De for ‘Keep smiling, the world needs beautiful things’, Jayanta Roy for ‘My Friends’ and Kumar Bishwajit for ‘Embracing the Beauty of Autumn’.
The competition was then opened up to the fans via social media where they were allowed to vote for the photographs they liked best. The two Viewer’s Choice photographs selected were ‘Let your smile change the world’ by Kartikey Brahmkshatriya and ‘Building Blocks’ by Arnab Adak.
