Her first pick is Pickle!

Jyotiramayee sarangi Akshaya patra Beneficiary

Once in a while we come across people who leave an impression on us. And one such person is Jyotiramayee Sarangi, but not for the usual reasons! This 13 year old girl benefitting from the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal programme, studying in the Rakama UPME School in Nayagarh district of Odisha claims that her favourite food is pickle!

Looking smart in her neatly pressed school uniform Jyotiramayee wants to be a teacher someday. Her father works as a mechanic while her mother is a housewife. She particularly enjoys studying English and MIL (Literature). When asked why she aspires to be a teacher, she attributes it to the fact that her teachers have always been very supportive of her progress in school and she wants take up the same profession as them.

As we spoke to her we drifted into her opinions on the food served as part of the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal programme. It was at this time when we asked her what food she enjoys the most as part of the daily menu she astounded us with her prompt, confident answer of “Pickle!”
As we burst into laughter at this information she shared a shy smile with us, perhaps realising how unusual this response was. Unfortunately that day pickle was not part of the mid-day meal, else we would have had a grand time watching Jyotiramayee relishing it. Nevertheless we did enjoy a few laughs with her, poking fun at her playfully for her interesting tastes in food while we clicked pictures of her school and her classmates.
