Akshaya-Patra-Mid-Day-Meals-Good-Food-Better-ConcentrationExams are coming around the corner and it’s time for children across the country to start gearing up to meet them. Children deal with a massive amount of pressure from parents, siblings, peer groups and education boards to do well. And this pressure is much more evident in children of low income households who have to fulfill other responsibilities like contributing to the family income, taking care of siblings etc., in addition to managing their school load.

That’s where having the right kind of nutrition can make all the difference. By eating at least one healthy meal a day, rich in the right nutrients, children are able to physically sustain the rigors of their daily life, and maintain better concentration on their education. The Akshaya Patra Foundation provides hot, nutritious mid-day meals to over 1.3 million children studying at government schools across India every day.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation provide children with a regular supply of nutritious food like drumstick, radish, carrot, potato, yogurt and other healthy substances  in their mid-day meals every day. Because of the high nutritional value of the drumstick, Sambar for children living in south India, and Dal for children living in north India is prepared regularly. The vegetable is rich in oleic acid and vitamin C as well as many vital B-Complex vitamins.

Radish is added to many Akshaya Patra mid-day meals for its nutritional value and to make the food wholesome and tasty. This vegetable is rich in Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Vitamin C and several others.  It is also a very good source of dietary fibre, and contains lots of water.

Yogurt (curd) is packed full of probiotics (good-for-you bacteria) that help combat intestinal infections. Yogurt helps aid digestion, strengthens the immune system, and is packed full of vitamins like potassium, vitamin B5, zinc, calcium and many others.

Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene which is converted to vitamin A. Carrots are an excellent source for improved night vision, prevent heart disease, flush out toxins, and even lead to healthy teeth and gums. In addition to this, the vitamin A also protects the skin from sun damage!

These are just some of the healthy nutrients that The Akshaya Patra Foundation provides to children every day across the country. Since eating this healthy food, studies have shown that the beneficiary children have started showing better health, more concentration in class, better examination results, greater energy and socialization in school activities and overall enjoy a healthier, more active childhood. With the help of their generous donors, The Akshaya Patra Foundation strives on to achieve its mission of bringing this nutritious food to 5 million children by 2020.
